KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile virtual network operator XOX Sdn Bhd is starting out small but has big plans to push its brand name among Malaysian youth.

It targets the Chinese youth market — those aged between 13 and 29 — with its cellular services, delivered via a leased telecommunications infrastructure.

XOX has about 40,000 subscribers and wants to increase this by making itself more visible. It has just made a deal with radio station 988 FM to air promotional programmes and other branding activities.

These radio programmes, it said, will ecourage interactivity between host and listeners.

XOX president Ng Kok Heng wants the brand name to be associated by the youth with all things popular.

“For example, the ‘X’ in our name is for extreme sports like with X-Games, and ‘XOX’ is also the usual way to signify hugs and kisses,” he said.

The company said 988 FM provides the perfect platform for it to further promote its services because the radio station is dynamic and appeals to XOX’s target market.

“It is a long term partnership that will help us maintain a close relationship with our customers,” Ng said.

Meanwhile, XOX is in the midst of planning new cellular services that will appeal even more to the Chinese youth.

Ng declined to give details just yet but revealed that one initiative is to offer a mobile plan that combines the best of prepaid and postpaid subscriptions for improved manageability by its service users.

The company recently launched its prepaid packages (prefix 010) in the market and said that it is riding on its mobile convergence solutions to give it an edge in the telco space.

“We regard mobile convergence as the meeting point of technology where users can access mobile and online content easily,” Ng said.
