New 11-digit mobile phone number format, effective next month
08 November 2010 – Malaysians soon will own 11-digit mobile phone number as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced the new format last week.
The new format will be the extension of the existing format from 3+7 to the new 3+8. According to Norizan Ghazali, Director of Numbering Planning Department, all service providers would share a similar “011” prefix under the new format.
He also said that both formats will co-exist after the roll-out. Hence existing users are not required to change into the new 3+8 format.
MCMC would regulate first three digits under the new format, which was no longer exclusive to any service providers.
The new 11-digit mobile phone number format will be effective 15 December, this year.
