This has got to be the most exciting news to hit us late last night. The iPhone 3G was announced and available at a lower price compared to the first generation iPhone. Retailing at USD199 for 8GB and USD299 for the 16GB version, it will start selling on July 11 in 22 countries and before the end of this year we should see the iPhone 3G reached another 70 countries.

Well, Malaysia isn’t in the first 22 list but we earnestly hope to be one of the 70 countries. Apple also promised that the prices are the same worldwide so we are guessing it will be tied to a contract of some sort.

The phone boasts of triband HSDPA connectivity, decent battery life, built in GPS, geotagging and 2 megapixel camera. However there are some missing features that would have made the iPhone 3G truly unbeatable. Missing features include memory card slot, secondary video call camera and video recording. There is also no word on any upgrade to its Bluetooth connectivity, so no A2DP or EDR folks.

The firmware 2.0 upgrade which comes with the iPhone 3G will be available for the first gen iPhones too. The upgrade is said to be available on July 11 as a free update via iTunes 7.7 or later and with it comes a few new features such as App Store.
