Kuala Lumpur, 10 June – “Our collaboration will hopefully be cost-saving for the consumer, once we sit down and work thorough the details,” said Celcom CEO, Dato’ Seri Shazalli Ramly. Celcom and DiGi today announced plans to work together on three key areas of their respective networks – operations and maintenance, transmission and site sharing and radio access network. The sharing model is geared towards reducing cost for both operators by removing duplication. An agreement is expected to be reached before the end of 2010 once both parties have agreed on the details.

Both telcos will still remain independent from each other, and promises to refrain from monopolizing pricing. “We are sharing networks yes, but how we market our products will depends on us individually,” said Dato’ Sri Shazalli.

“We expect the market to remain as competitive as ever, even with our collaboration,” added Henrik Clausen, CEO DiGi.

Dato Sri Shazalli also admitted Celcom and DiGi will iron out issues which were “sensitive” before, to improve their co-operation.

The MoU was signed in the presence of MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Khalid Ramli. Also there were, Dato’ Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, Managing Director /president of Group CEO of Axiata and Sigve Brekke ,executive Vice President of Telenor Group and head of Telenor Region Asia.

Malaysian newspaper The Star reports that STT will acquire a 33 percent stake from U-Mobile parent U-Television for around MYR626 million (US$183 million). Sources say that talks between STT and U-Television began last September and a due diligence on U-Mobile is said to have already been completed. U-Television has been reportedly looking for a strategic investor in U-Mobile ever since Japan’s NTT Docomo and South Korea’s KT sold their joint 33 percent stake in the operator back to the parent last Autumn. The two foreign operators sold their stake for MYR680 million amid concerns that the start-up operator was failing to compete with larger Malaysian rivals such as Maxis, Celcom Axiata and DiGi.

U-Mobile launched services in March 2008 on a proposition based around its advanced WCDMA/HSPA network. However, according to Wireless Intelligence data, the operator had just 410,000 connections by the end of last year, giving it a mere 1.5 percent share of the market. “We are constantly evaluating investment proposals and exploring business opportunities with potential partners to enhance our business growth,” said STT in a statement without being specific. STT controls StarHub, Singapore’s second-largest operator. ♠ JC

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (DiGi) and U Mobile Sdn Bhd have today entered into a Domestic Roaming Agreement giving U Mobile access to DiGi’s nationwide 2G network in Malaysia.

The agreement, which is for 3 years, will see DiGi as the exclusive provider of domestic roaming traffic services for U Mobile. This will enable U Mobile to offer its customers an enhanced portfolio of voice, SMS and data services (including GPRS/EDGE) nationwide. The agreement will also ensure the establishment of seamless hand-over of voice calls from U Mobile’s 3G network to DiGi’s 2G network.

Johan Dennelind, Chief Executive Officer of DiGi said, “We have proven that our network offers high quality and stable coverage, and today DiGi offers the newest Turbo 3G (14.4Mbps HSPA) network in the market to complement our 2G network. We are pleased to extend our 2G network reach to even more mobile and internet customers through this partnership.”

“We see wholesale as a business opportunity. By prudently leveraging off our existing infrastructure, we will benefit from increased network utilization and efficiency that can generate additional revenue for the company,” added Dennelind.

Kenneth Chang, Executive Director of U Mobile explained, “U Mobile has been aggressively rolling out its own 3G network, and today U Mobile has extensive 3G coverage in some key areas.”

He continued, “This relationship will complement U Mobile’s extensive 3G coverage by providing our customers a truly competitive product offering with nationwide voice and SMS, coupled with data services and better customer experience through seamless roaming. U Mobile always aims to provide better services to our customers.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) — New mobile operator XOX Com Sdn Bhd (XOX Com) is confident of reaching one million subscribers by the end of next year from the 100,000 currently, said its president, Ng Kok Heng.

“With our innovative packaging and marketing, XOX Com is confident of reaching this goal by the end of next year,” he told reporters after launching the company’s latest prepaid package called, XinXun mobile prepaid, here on Tuesday.

He also said that the introduction of postpaid and mobile internet services in two months time will further support XOX Com’s efforts to achieve the subscriber target.

According to Ng, the services will be offered at a competitive rate.

XOX Com is the country’s first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) with the 010 prefix, leveraging on Celcom’s extensive network to offer a spectrum of services ranging from the GSM, GPRS, 3G to 3.5G.

Ng said XOX Com is also planning to increase its dealer network to 10,000 nationwide by the middle of next year from the 7,500 currently to support the growing subscriber base.

On the new XinXun mobile prepaid service, he explained that it was innovated to be the first of its kind in Malaysia, with the ‘Short Call Service’ feature.

A XinXun mobile prepaid call is priced at eight sen for the first 15 seconds.

“We have priced it affordably as lots of people use less than 15 seconds to say a quick greeting to loved ones, or check on status updates,” Ng said.

XinXun mobile prepaid which means ‘new telco’ in Chinese, has three call rates, namely classic, silver and gold.It offers a cheaper rate when the customer reloads for a higher sum.

“For example, if you reload RM20, the rates are 32 sen per minute. However, if you reload for RM50, the call rates are 15 sen per minute. The rate is similar to that for postpaid,” Ng explained.

In addition, XOX Com is also offering the XinXun mobile prepaid subscribers 150 free SMS every month and special low rates to call and SMS to any 15 postpaid and prepaid family as well as friends.

“Having invested close to RM10 million to market, produce and brand the XinXun mobile prepaid, XOX Com is confident of receiving good response for it,” Ng said.
